Curtin Volunteers! Family Day features ‘The Amazing Race’

Miri – 9 September 2015 – The Curtin Volunteers! (CV!), the largest student organisation of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), recently organised ‘The Amazing Race’ in conjunction with its CV! Family Day.

Based on the popular reality show, the CV! Family Day Amazing Race saw 13 teams competing to win the grand prize – a Full Discover Diving Session courtesy of Hoopa Diving Club worth RM1,200.

The event was organised with the aim of strengthening teamwork amongst its members and establishing rapport with non-members, which the CV! believes is essential for the continued success of its community-based projects.

The race kicked off at Curtin Sarawak’s Recreation & Event Centre with a short introduction to the CV! and a briefing on the objectives and rules of the race. The participating teams were then put through a series of tasks leading them to six stations – Taj Restaurant and Madli’s Restaurant Lutong, Bulatan Park, Bintang Megamall, Miri Airport and Tanjong Lobang Beach.

One of the major challenges of the race was the “Mamak Crash Course” where the participants were given the options of making three pieces of roti canai at Taj Restaurant or skewing 120 sticks of satay at Madli’s Restaurant to the satisfaction of the respective restaurant owners.

Yuhansitinee Ravichandran, Brian Robin Stanislaus, Jeyaraj Johari, and Vinnayag Ram, who made up the team LA300, emerged the winners of the race.

The race ended with a dinner for the participants at Marina Seahorse Bistro 2.

Organising chairman Matthew Wong remarked that The Amazing Race event was a great achievement for the CV! as they had always wanted to organise such an event in Miri.

“Everyone had a great deal of fun and it was a great opportunity for them to discover Miri. We could not have done it without the support of Hoopa Diving Club, as well as the other sponsors such as Taj’s Restaurant, Madli’s, Marina Seahorse Bistro and Curtin Cube,” added Wong.

Besides being the largest student-driven organisation at Curtin Sarawak, Curtin Volunteers! is one of the university’s most active student volunteer organisations. Since its inception in 2002, it has been assisting students and staff of the university, as well as the wider community, to experience the many benefits of volunteerism.

It regularly organises activities and projects such as blood donation drives, beach cleaning campaigns, charity fundraisers, as well as community outreach projects in support of rural communities.
