Ninth Curtin Sarawak Open Day this 26 September

Miri – 31 July 2015 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be holding its ninth Open Day at its campus from 10 am to 5 pm this 26 September 2016.

Next to its graduation ceremonies, the Curtin Sarawak Open Day is the most anticipated annual event at the Curtin Sarawak campus. Established in 2006, it has since become an annual fixture and a key event in the university’s calendar of student recruitment and brand-building.

Each year, it involves a massive logistical effort and the support of a large number of staff and students, proving a hit each time. Everyone looks forward to the event – from the university community of close to 4,000 students and over 400 staff, to potential students and their families and the larger local community.

In recent years, the event has attracted visitors by the thousands. Last year, close to 10,000 thronged the campus in Desa Senadin – the event’s largest crowd ever.

The Curtin Sarawak Open Day is the public’s chance to explore the campus, learn about courses it offers, participate in activities, and generally have lots of fun.

Potential students can visit the Future Students Booth where they can gather first-hand knowledge about the various academic programmes offered, course accreditation, scholarships and loans, and more. They can talk to lecturers, student recruitment staff and current students, who can help them make informed decisions about studying at Curtin Sarawak.

Another key attraction will be the Innovation Expo, a showcase of the university’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Business and Humanities, Graduate School and Curtin Sarawak Research Institute. Visitors will get to view displays of robotics, research projects and lab simulations, and participate in interactive games, quizzes and other interesting learning activities.

Other highlights will include day-long stage performances, lucky draws and special event showcases such as the very hotly-contested Miri’s Got Talent and Mr & Miss Curtin competitions organised by the Curtin Sarawak Student Council and student clubs.

Other forms of entertainment involving local community groups and businesses are also on the cards to ensure a fun-filled day. Among those confirmed is the Melanau Tibou in collaboration with the Miri Melanau Association, which has become an annual fixture at the event since 2013.

There will also be a wide range of food and beverage stalls operated by student clubs, staff, local hotels and eateries, where visitors can purchase and indulge in exotic food and beverages from around the world at very affordable prices. There will also be a number of stalls featuring games and other activities, and promoting goods and services.

In addition, the Open Day will once again feature its ‘Charity & Community Corner’ involving local non-governmental organisations where the public can learn more about various charitable and community causes. As the Miri City Council is a key event partner, its Local Agenda 21 environmental programme will also be featured.

Not forgetting the young ones visiting the campus on the day, there will be the ‘Kiddies’ Corner’ where they can delight in a range of fun activities, meet The Minions and other mascots, and participate in a colouring competition.

Another crowd-puller will be the event’s lucky draws. Attractive prizes including electrical goods, bicycles and smartphones will be given away in a series of lucky draws throughout the day. Sponsorship for lucky draw prizes is still being sought and a full list of prizes will be made known at a later date.

To be eligible for the draws, as well as door gifts, visitors will need to purchase lucky draw and door gift tickets priced at RM5 each or RM50 for a booklet of ten tickets, the proceeds from which will be donated to charity. The tickets will go on sale from mid-August onwards and will also be available during the event.

According to the event organising chair, Corporate Communications Manager Nicholas Leong, the university looks forward to another good turnout at this year’s event. He said the organising committee comprising student representatives and staff from virtually all areas of the university are working hard to ensure a successful event, and moreover, introduce new attractions to make it more lively and interesting.
