Young Engineers Section (YES) of IEM Miri Branch fostering professional development by visiting Sarawak Energy Berhad

Miri, Sarawak – 13 June 2024 – The Young Engineers Section (YES) of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch recently organised an engagement visit to the Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) office here in Miri.

Led by YES-IEM Miri Branch Chairman Ts. Francis Liaw Zhen, the event saw enthusiastic participation from both engineering professionals and students, who were largely from the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia). The attendees gained invaluable insights into various aspects of power infrastructure, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the industry.

Notable attendees included IEM Curtin Malaysia Student Section advisor Jameson Malang and his committee members, as well as Dr. Paran Gani, a lecturer from Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Civil and Construction Engineering.

The event commenced with a welcoming speech from Professor Ir. Stephanie Chan, Vice Chairman II of the IEM Miri Branch and Head of the Department of Chemical and Energy Engineering at Curtin Malaysia, followed by a detailed overview of the IEM organisation by Vice Chairman I Associate Professor Ir. Wong Kwong Soon, who is Head of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering.

During the visit following the talk, the participants explored crucial topics such as the e-CX Database, Network System Reinforcement, and Overhead Lines Maintenance. Then, Ir. Meheron Selowara Joo, Chairman of the IEM Miri Branch and a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, shared some tips on becoming a professional engineer.

A highlight of the visit was the visit to the Extra High Voltage (EHV) substation, where the participants gained first-hand experience and knowledge about its purpose and operational intricacies.

The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and professional development, fostering a deeper understanding of power systems and infrastructure management among the participants.

The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959 and its primary function is to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in all engineering disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering. It is a governmental executive body under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

The Young Engineers Section (YES) is a subsidiary group under IEM which gathers and cultivates young engineers to be future leaders in their respective engineering fields.
