Award-winning journalist brings real-world perspective to Curtin Malaysia lecture on media, politics and activism
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 3 July 2025 – In a blend of real-world experience and academic insight, award-winning investigative journalist Low Choon Chyuan captivated students and staff at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) during a guest lecture on ‘Media, Politics, and Activism’.
Hosted under the Foundation in Arts and Commerce programme by Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), the lecture explored the evolving role of investigative journalism in Malaysia, shedding light on how policy decisions, political power, and activism intersect in stories that matter.
Drawing from years of impactful reporting on environmental issues, government accountability, and marginalised communities, Low offered a behind-the-scenes look into the craft and courage behind investigative journalism. He shared real case studies of investigations that led to tangible policy outcomes and social change.
Beyond storytelling, he introduced students to the tools and ethics of the trade, detailing methods for research and verification, navigating risks, and the importance of building trust with vulnerable sources.
The students described the session as ‘eye-opening’, saying it challenged their views on media, power, and activism. One student reflected, “It showed us how journalism, at its best, speaks truth to power and amplifies the voices we rarely hear.”
Kamaroizan Mohamad, Head of the Department of Arts and Commerce, said the event was more than a lecture; it was a catalyst for critical thinking. “It bridged theory with lived experience and demonstrated journalism’s power to influence society,” he said.
The lecture attracted an enthusiastic audience of students, faculty, and community members, underscoring Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to practice-based, socially relevant education.
