Chinese Consul General visits Curtin Sarawak
Posted date:Miri – 24 February 2014 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) received the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, His Excellency Liu Quan and his wife on a visit to its campus on Saturday.
On hand to receive them were Sarawak Assistant Minister of Communications, Datuk Dr. Lee Kim Shin, who is the chairman of Curtin Sarawak’s management board; Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia; Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Ching, and several management staff of the university.
Also present were representatives of the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by chairman Temenggong Dato Sri Lee Sie Tong, as well as four Chinese students currently pursuing English, foundation and undergraduate courses at Curtin Sarawak.
In thanking Datuk Lee for his invitation to visit the campus, Mr. Liu said he was glad to be able to see the campus for himself and that Curtin Sarawak offered students from China an attractive alternative to studying in Australia, offering the same courses as Curtin in Australia at a fraction of the cost, as well as the option to transfer to other Curtin campuses at any time.
He added that he was happy to note that Curtin Sarawak currently has over 70 Chinese students pursuing various courses at the campus and hoped that with greater promotion, it will be able to attract more students from China to study here in Miri, which he described as a scenic, safe and vibrant city where the people are very friendly.
Datuk Lee, meanwhile, said he hoped Chinese students would also consider studying at Curtin Sarawak at postgraduate level. He said there are a lot of opportunities for Chinese postgraduate students and academics to conduct research here in Sarawak, and Curtin Sarawak being both a teaching and research university, was conducive for them.
He added that the state-funded BioValley Park being developed at the Curtin Sarawak campus would add great impetus to the research activities already being carried out at the campus which is now entering its fifteenth year.
