Curtin Business Insight Series explores how Miri can strengthen Its global competitiveness
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 27 October 2026 – How can Miri move beyond its traditional economic foundations to become a more diversified, connected and competitive city? This question took centre stage at the second Curtin Business Insight Series (CBIS), organised by the Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), bringing together more than 140 participants to explore opportunities for Miri’s future growth in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
The session featured Ar. Teo Ah Khing, Chairman of Imasa Dinasti Sdn. Bhd., who delivered a presentation titled “The Evolution of Miri to Stay Ahead of Global Competition.” Drawing on perspectives from the development of Kenyalang Smart City and Sarawak’s broader economic potential, he shared insights into how Miri could strengthen its competitiveness and unlock new avenues for sustainable development.
Ar. Teo highlighted the importance of looking beyond the city’s traditional economic strengths by embracing technology and innovation, strengthening regional connectivity, and developing emerging growth sectors. Among the opportunities discussed were healthcare, education, tourism, logistics and cross-border trade, which could contribute to a more diversified economic landscape for Miri.
He also underscored the importance of nurturing local talent and creating meaningful opportunities for businesses and communities to participate in the city’s long-term development. Such efforts, he emphasised, are essential to building a more resilient economy and positioning Miri to respond to changing regional and global opportunities.
The event attracted a broad cross-section of civic, academic and business leaders, including Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang; Datuk Lau Siu Wai, Executive Chairman of Miri Housing Group; and Datuk Nelson Balang Rining, President of the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Faculty representatives included Professor Pauline Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Business; Dr. Ivy Hii, Associate Dean (External Engagement); and Associate Professor Lew Tek Yew.
Also in attendance were representatives from the Office of the Member of Parliament for Miri, delegations from the TAK Group of Companies, industry representatives from Crowe Malaysia, the Malaysian Association of Hotels Sarawak Chapter and Mercure Miri City, as well as representatives of financial institutions, Curtin Malaysia staff and students, and members of the local community.
Professor Ho said the series provides an important platform for connecting academic perspectives with industry experience and encouraging informed discussion on issues shaping the region’s future.
“The Curtin Business Insight Series connects our students, staff and community with industry leaders to exchange perspectives on issues that matter to our region. Discussions such as this broaden our understanding of Miri’s future opportunities and the role of talent, innovation and collaboration in driving sustainable growth,” she said.
Building on the success of the inaugural session, CBIS reinforced the Faculty of Business’ commitment to strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and the wider community. By bringing experienced industry voices into the university environment, the series creates opportunities for participants to exchange ideas, explore emerging economic challenges and consider practical approaches to regional development.
Led by the Faculty of Business’ External Engagement Committee, the Curtin Business Insight Series aims to establish an ongoing platform for dialogue on contemporary business and economic issues. For students, the sessions offer valuable exposure to industry perspectives that complement classroom learning; for the wider community, they create opportunities to engage with ideas and insights relevant to Miri’s economic future.
As Miri continues to explore new pathways for growth, conversations that bring together industry expertise, academic knowledge and community perspectives can help broaden understanding of the opportunities ahead and the collective effort required to realise the city’s potential.
