Curtin Club Carnival: New students’ gateway to campus life
Posted date:Miri – 5 April 2024 – The Student Council of Curtin University (Curtin Malaysia) recently held its two-day Curtin Club Carnival, a vibrant showcase of over 50 booths at the university’s Recreation & Event Centre, featuring an array of student clubs catering to diverse interests.
Scheduled at the onset of each semester, this event serves as a pivotal platform for new students to explore and engage with the dynamic campus community, as well as an opportunity for current students to discover new interests and further enrich their university experience.
With a plethora of offerings ranging from academic clubs to special interest groups, religious organisations to non-profit initiatives, and sports clubs, the Curtin Club Carnival epitomises the rich tapestry of student life at Curtin Malaysia. Whether it is delving deeper into academic pursuits, nurturing hobbies, fostering cultural bonds, or contributing to social causes, there is a club for every passion.
For new students, the Club Carnival signifies more than just a showcase; it is a gateway to assimilating into the vibrant fabric of campus life. By offering a glimpse into the myriad opportunities for involvement, the fair empowers newcomers to carve their niche within the university community from the outset. It is not merely about finding a club but about finding a sense of belonging and purpose.
Beyond catering to newcomers, the Club Carnival is also frequented by current students seeking to enrich their university journey. For them, it serves as a catalyst for exploration, encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones, discover new interests, and forge meaningful connections.
According to Student Council President Tang Siok Yek, the Curtin Club Carnival, previously known as Curtin Club Fair, is not just an event; it is a movement towards fostering inclusivity, diversity, and engagement within the campus community. With a student population of just over 2,000 students from over 50 different countries, it is a very diverse and dynamic community indeed.
At the event’s opening ceremony, Curtin Malaysia’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Vincent Lee commended the Student Council and participating student clubs for the spectacular ‘Back to the 90’s’-themed event, saying the Club Carnival serves as a cornerstone event that fosters a vibrant campus community by providing students with a platform to explore diverse interests, cultivate leadership skills, and expand social networks.
Prof. Lee reiterated the university’s commitment to supporting student engagement activities like the Club Carnival, which play a pivotal role in enhancing the overall student experience and promoting holistic development.
Meanwhile, Miri City Councillor Kelvin Chia, who represented guest of honour Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting at the event’s closing ceremony, emphasised how an active campus life and fostering lifelong friendships should be an integral part of each student’s university experience as it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be cherished always. He also encouraged students from different faculties and fields of study to interact and learn from each another through involvement in the different clubs.
Also present at both the opening and closing ceremonies was organising chairperson Harvina Kaur.
