Curtin cricket tournament strengthens campus–community ties through sport

Miri, Sarawak – 23 October 2026 – Bringing together students, staff and local residents through a shared love of cricket, the Curtin Malaysia Cricket Club’s recent two-day friendly tournament at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) celebrated not only sporting camaraderie but also the power of sport to build cross-cultural connections and strengthen community ties.

Held at the university’s Cricket Field, the tournament provided a platform for friendly competition and meaningful interaction among participants from diverse backgrounds, fostering a stronger sense of belonging within the university and the wider Miri community.

Led by Curtin Cricket Club President Tayyab Ahmed and Club Advisor Dr. Mohammad Abdul Matin Chowdhury, the event was supported by Dr. Shahid Latif and Dr. Hosam Alden Riyadh.

The tournament concluded with an awards presentation ceremony officiated by Dr. Muhammad Imran Tanveer Opel, who commended the players and organisers for their participation and contributions. Reflecting on the matches, Dr. Imran recalled his own younger days playing cricket and highlighted the energy and sense of community that sport brings to university life.

Representing the community team, Jamil Khan thanked the club for the invitation, describing the tournament as a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships between the university and the local community.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with students and staff while strengthening ties between the university and the local community,” he said.

For international students, the tournament also offered a familiar connection to home. Dr. Muhammad Usman, captain of the student and staff team, said cricket provided an important way for students to maintain cultural connections while building friendships across the campus community.

“For many international students, cricket is more than just a sport; it is a piece of home. Playing alongside friends, staff, and community members creates a sense of connection and lasting memories. It also offers a great chance to introduce the game to local students who may be less familiar with it,” he said.

Beyond the competition, the tournament provided opportunities for recreation, stress relief and social interaction, supporting student well-being while encouraging engagement across cultural and community groups.

Through initiatives such as this, Curtin Malaysia continues to promote an inclusive campus environment where sport serves as a bridge between the university and the wider community.
