Curtin Malaysia academics equip Kolej Vokasional Miri students with skills to tackle real-world business challenges

Miri, Sarawak – 26 August 2026 – Students at Kolej Vokasional Miri gained practical insights into turning real-world business challenges into meaningful research projects when academics from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) conducted a Final Year Project workshop for Accounting and Business students recently.

Led by Dr. Lau Pun Lee and Dr. Lynn Ling Yew Hua from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, the workshop focused on helping the students develop Final Year Projects that are not only academically sound but also relevant to practical challenges faced by businesses and users.

Drawing on their academic and project supervision experience, Dr. Lau and Dr. Ling guided the students through the process of identifying potential project areas by observing existing practices, recognising challenges and identifying opportunities for improvement.

The academics emphasised that a strong Final Year Project begins with a clearly defined problem and requires a logical connection between the problem identified, the project objectives and the proposed solution.

Using practical examples from Accounting and Business, the facilitators demonstrated how students can move systematically from identifying a problem to developing focused objectives and, ultimately, proposing an appropriate solution.

The workshop also highlighted several considerations that can make a project more effective, including keeping its scope manageable, demonstrating its relevance, communicating ideas clearly and being able to explain and justify decisions made throughout the project.

The interactive session gave the students an opportunity to discuss their own project ideas with the Curtin Malaysia academics and gain a broader perspective on how their projects could address practical needs while meeting academic requirements.

The engagement reflects Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to supporting the development of future-ready talent by connecting students with academic expertise and real-world perspectives.
