Curtin Malaysia achieves milestone with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation of its FOES Testing Laboratory
Posted date:Miri – 23 August 2022 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has achieved yet another milestone with the granting of MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation by the Department of Standards Malaysia to the university’s FOES Testing Laboratory.
The accreditation for metallic materials testing granted on 15 July 2022 under the Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SAMM), the Laboratory Accreditation Scheme of Malaysia, makes the FOES Testing Laboratory at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science the second institution of higher learning in Sarawak to be accredited for metallic materials testing, and the only one in the northern region of Sarawak.
ISO/IEC 17025 is an international standard designed for the accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories. It includes quality management system requirements along with technical requirements to ensure that they are equipped to perform particular tests and calibration activities. Laboratories accredited under SAMM meet the requirements of MS ISO/IEC 17025, which is the Malaysian standard identical to ISO/IEC 17025 published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, said the FOES Testing Laboratory has proven that it can provide metallic materials testing of a very high standard. The laboratory established in 2019 offers tensile, compression and bending testing using advanced equipment that provide fast, accurate and reliable test results. Furthermore, its services are competitively priced and solutions can be tailor-made to suit clients’ testing needs.
“This accreditation demonstrates that we can operate competently and generate valid results, and our clients in industry or other organisations that need to do metallic materials testing both nationally and around the world are assured of the best services,” said Prof. Vu.
He added that the laboratory’s testing services can also be beneficial to academics and researchers at Curtin Malaysia itself, as well as other universities, research centres, government bodies, regulators, inspection bodies, product certification organisations and conformity assessment bodies.
The laboratory is managed and operated by a well-trained and competent team of technical staff who have had many years’ experience in managing teaching and research laboratories and are well-versed with the MS ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
