Curtin Malaysia and Pustaka Miri engage community with 25 inspiring public lectures
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 9 December 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), through its School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), has reached a significant milestone by completing 25 public lectures in collaboration with Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri (Pustaka Miri) this year. This landmark initiative, marking Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary, underscores the university’s commitment to making education accessible and enriching public knowledge.
The lecture series, which ran throughout 2024, explored a diverse range of topics, from cultural awareness and financial literacy to STEM education, media literacy, digital skills, and sustainable development. Each session featured expert speakers carefully selected to inspire curiosity and ignite meaningful discussions, reflecting the university’s anniversary theme, ‘25 Years of Excellence: Celebrating Our Past, Embracing Our Future’.
Associate Professor Fidella Tiew, Dean of SPACE, hailed the collaboration with Pustaka Miri as a transformative effort in community engagement. “These public lectures have not only educated and inspired attendees but also fostered a stronger bond between the university and the local community,” she said.
The final session, titled ‘Decoding Cinema: How to Read Films’, offered a captivating conclusion to the series. Delivered by Peter Jamba, Associate Teaching Fellow of SPACE, the session took participants on an insightful journey into the art of film analysis, exploring visual language, cinematography, sound, and editing.
Held at Pustaka Miri’s audio-visual room, the session exemplified the programme’s core mission: to make academic knowledge engaging and accessible.
“This collaboration has proven to be a resounding success, with over two dozen sessions sparking new ideas, conversations, and opportunities for learning. We have built a foundation for future initiatives that will continue to enrich the public and nurture a culture of lifelong learning,” remarked Associate Professor Tiew.
The series was also a testament to the synergy between Curtin Malaysia and Pustaka Miri, as noted by Muhammad Annwar Adenan of Pustaka Miri’s Community Engagement Services Division. “Both organisations share a vision of expanding educational outreach and fostering meaningful community connections,” he commented.
Curtin Malaysia and Pustaka Miri are already exploring ways to extend this impactful partnership. “We are excited to explore new initiatives that further engage and benefit the community,” Associate Professor Tiew added.
