Curtin Malaysia brings accounting to life for Miri secondary students through CPA outreach

Miri, Sarawak – 25 April 2025 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is inspiring the next generation of accountants through dynamic school outreach, giving secondary school students in Miri a firsthand glimpse into the world of professional accounting and the prestigious Certified Public Accountants (CPA) qualification.

The initiative, led by Yip Ka Yii, an accounting and finance lecturer and CPA ambassador from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, saw visits to SMK St. Columba, Pei Min Middle School, and Riam Road Secondary School.

During the sessions, Yip shared valuable insights into the CPA programme, demystifying the process of becoming a CPA and highlighting the global career opportunities it unlocks.

“Accounting is more than just numbers; it is about strategic thinking, problem-solving and making a real impact in business,” said Yip, whose personal journey in the accounting field inspired students to view the profession in a new light.

Her sessions not only raised awareness of professional accounting bodies such as CPA Australia but also helped students understand how professional qualifications can accelerate their future careers. She also emphasised the relevance of choosing the right academic foundation, such as pursuing Curtin’s Bachelor of Commerce with a single major in Accounting, or a double major in Accounting and Finance.

These courses are accredited by CPA Australia and other major professional bodies, offering students a seamless pathway from classroom to career.

This outreach is part of Curtin Malaysia’s wider commitment to aligning education with industry needs, equipping students with the insights and opportunities to make informed career decisions.

By engaging students early, Curtin Malaysia hopes to spark interest in accounting as a dynamic and rewarding profession, and to continue building a pipeline of future-ready accounting professionals who can contribute meaningfully to business and society.
