Curtin Malaysia brings science to life for SMK Lutong students

Miri, Sarawak – 28 March 2025 – A thrilling hands-on science experience ignited curiosity and excitement among 154 Form One and Form Two students at SMK Lutong as Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently brought its Science Experiment Showcase: Fun with Science to the school.

The interactive event, organised by Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, aimed to make science both accessible and enjoyable while supporting Sarawak’s drive to increase STEM participation by 2026. Led by a dynamic team of Curtin Malaysia students, the showcase featured a series of exciting experiments designed to bridge classroom concepts with real-world applications.

The SMK Lutong students were captivated by explosive Elephant Toothpaste reactions, mesmerising Lava Lamps, and the strange properties of Non-Newtonian Fluids. These engaging activities not only illustrated fundamental principles of chemistry and physics but also provided a glimpse into potential careers and scholarships in STEM fields.

Project advisor Ir. Jenney Ngu emphasised the importance of hands-on learning in fostering future innovators. “When students engage with science through interactive experiences, they develop critical thinking skills and a passion for discovery. This initiative reflects Curtin Malaysia’s dedication to nurturing young scientific minds while contributing to Sarawak’s vision of a skilled STEM workforce,” she said.

The event was meticulously planned by a team of Curtin Malaysia students from both engineering and commerce disciplines, including David Su Teck Zhi, Joshua Law Yung Jian, Liew Jia Yung, Liew Jia Wen, Lim Jie, Sharon Ting Yee Yee, Sim Yian Hann, Wong Kho Ik, Tsen Li Ni, and Yam Yee Chi. Their structured approach, which included assigned roles and safety protocols, ensured a seamless and secure experience for all the participants.

The students expressed enthusiasm for the programme, with many saying the experiments helped them see science in a whole new light. The organisers hope that initiatives like these will continue to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators in Sarawak.
