Curtin Malaysia celebrates graduates’ achievements in grand ceremony

Miri, Sarawak – 8 July 2024 – The Recreation & Events Centre at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently resonated with cheers and applause, celebrating the outstanding achievements of its latest cohort of graduates.

This year, 511 students from three faculties completed their studies: the Faculty of Business (191), the Faculty of Engineering and Science (210), and the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences (78). Additionally, 32 graduates completed the Higher Degree Research (HDR) programme.

The Graduation Ceremony, attended by 330 graduates, was a festive and momentous occasion, especially as it coincided with Curtin Malaysia’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. The event saw hundreds of attendees, including invited guests, and graduates’ family members, gathering to honour the academic journeys of these new alumni. The event marked the culmination of their three- or four-year university journeys, and the start of a bright future for each graduate.

Dignitaries in attendance included Pro-Chancellor of Curtin Malaysia Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam; Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Professor Xiaotian Zhang, and other senior executives from Curtin University Perth; members of Curtin Malaysia’s Council and Board of Directors; and Curtin Malaysia’s senior management led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Leunig.

Also in attendance were founders, former pro vice-chancellors, deputy pro vice-chancellors and chief operating officers of Curtin Malaysia, as well as representatives of the Curtin alumni chapters in Malaysia and Singapore, attending its anniversary celebratory events.

Professor Hayne described this year’s graduation ceremony as particularly auspicious, coinciding with Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary.

“Curtin Malaysia is Curtin’s earliest and largest global campus. For a quarter of a century, it has been at the forefront of delivering top-tier undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across diverse disciplines, alongside pre-university courses leading to undergraduate programmes,” she remarked, adding that the campus is also now ranked by the Malaysian Government as a 5-Star Institution for its research excellence through the Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA), and the highest-ranked university in Borneo.

In his address, Dr. Chan urged the graduates to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination. “Use your knowledge and skills to advance your personal growth and uplift those around you. Be compassionate, empathetic, and understanding of our diverse world. Let these values guide your actions as you navigate your future endeavours,” he said.

He also emphasised that learning is a lifelong journey. “Your graduation day does not mark the end of your education but rather the beginning of a new chapter in your pursuit of knowledge. Embrace opportunities, continue to expand your horizons, and never stop learning. Seek out academic and professional mentors who can guide and inspire you along your journey,” he added.

Reflecting on Curtin Malaysia’s 25th Anniversary, Dr. Chan acknowledged the university community’s collective efforts. “This milestone is a testament to the contributions of our students, alumni, faculty, and staff. It signifies a rich history of academic excellence and a bright future of continued innovation and impact,” he concluded.
