Curtin Malaysia celebrates student milestone with pre-graduation gathering and alumni inspiration

Miri, Sarawak – 30 May 2025 Curtin University Malaysia recently hosted a pre-graduation gathering for 120 final-year students from its faculties of Engineering and Science, Business, and Humanities and Health Sciences, celebrating the end of their academic journey and preparing them for the transition into the workforce.

Held on campus, the event combined practical briefings with inspirational sharing sessions. It kicked off with faculty-specific discussions, including an informative presentation by Ir. Meheron Selowara Joo, Senior Lecturer in Civil and Construction Engineering, on professional pathways and registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

The combined session was officiated by Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Learning and Teaching, on behalf of Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive, Professor Vincent Lee. The students received key updates on graduation procedures, academic requirements, postgraduate study options, and exclusive alumni benefits such as career services and discounts.

A highlight of the event was an engaging alumni forum featuring three Curtin Malaysia alumni – Elias Chang Li Shan (Mechanical Engineering, 2021), Lenna Wee Lee Jin (Accounting and Finance, 2024), and Jonathan Raphael Liam (Public Relations and Screen Production, 2024). Each shared how their Curtin experience equipped them for success in their respective fields of engineering, auditing, and broadcast media.

Elias, a Piping Engineer with Ranhill Worley, spoke about working on large-scale engineering projects including offshore assignments in Indonesia. Lenna, now with KPMG Malaysia, credited her pandemic-era learning and involvement in student initiatives for building her resilience and leadership. Jonathan, Executive Editor at TV Sarawak (TVS), highlighted the power of storytelling and how Curtin Malaysia nurtured his passion for impactful media production.

The forum offered students real-world insights into life after graduation, current industry trends, and strategies for career success. The event concluded with a group photo session, closing the chapter on student life with celebration and optimism.

Also present were faculty deans and senior academics, including Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science; Professor Roy Rillera Marzo, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences; Associate Professor Bridgid Chin Lai Fui, Faculty of Engineering and Science Chair for Students and Alumni Relations; Dr. Fayrene Chieng, Faculty of Business Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching; Associate Professor Perumal Kumar, Acting Director of the Curtin Malaysia Graduate School; and Chin Li Yen, Manager of Career and Alumni Services.
