Curtin Malaysia champions youth empowerment and sustainability at Borneo SDG Summit 3.0

Miri, Sarawak – 11 November 2025 – In a powerful display of youth-led action for sustainability, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) joined forces with Junior Chamber International (JCI) Miri for the third Borneo Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 3.0, held recently at MYY Mall, Miri.

Now in its third year of partnership, Curtin Malaysia’s active participation underscored its ongoing commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through education, community engagement, and industry collaboration.

Leading the university’s delegation, Dr. Ivy Hii, Associate Dean of External Engagement of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, coordinated a multidisciplinary team of staff and students whose contributions brought academic insight, creativity, and community spirit to the forefront of the two-day event.

A key highlight was a talk titled ‘The Power of You: The Journey to Psychological Well-being’ by Associate Professor Lew Tek Yew, Head of the Department of Management and Marketing at the Faculty of Business, which explored mental health as a cornerstone of sustainable living and individual empowerment. His session resonated strongly with attendees, sparking meaningful conversations around well-being and resilience in the context of sustainability.

The Faculty of Business’s Sustainable Fashion Hub, led by Dr. Tiong Ying, Associate Dean of Research and Development, also drew attention with a vibrant exhibition featuring student-led projects in sustainable fashion, showcasing how innovation and environmental consciousness can intersect in creative industries.

Beyond academia, Curtin Malaysia’s student community played a vital role in ensuring the success of the summit. The Curtin Basketball Club took charge as competition organisers, promoting teamwork and healthy lifestyles. The Curtin Volunteers! contributed as dedicated event crew, managing logistics and programme coordination, while the Student Recruitment team engaged visitors and prospective students at Curtin Malaysia’s booth, sharing insights into the university’s sustainability-driven programmes and initiatives.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Dr. Hii said, “Our continued involvement in the Borneo SDG Summit reflects Curtin Malaysia’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, partnership, and youth empowerment. Through initiatives like this, our students not only put their learning into practice but also make a genuine impact in the community by advancing the SDGs.”

The strong public participation at the summit highlighted the growing momentum of sustainability initiatives in Sarawak. Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing engagement reaffirms its role as a regional leader in shaping responsible global citizens and supporting Sarawak’s vision for a greener, more inclusive future.
