Curtin Malaysia diploma students engage with children at Miri Methodist Children’s Home

Miri – 10 January 2024 – A group of 12 diploma students of the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) calling themselves ‘Team SUPER’ recently carried out a community service programme at the Miri Methodist Children’s Home in Krokop. The day-long programme was aimed at providing emotional support and catering to the daily and educational needs of the children at the home.

Team SUPER comprised 12 students pursuing diplomas in Information Technology, Media, and Commerce. The team engaged with home’s 16 primary school age children, helping them enhance their understanding of the subjects learnt in school by holding homework tutoring sessions. The subjects included mathematics, English, and Malay.

Additionally, interactive and fun games and activities were conducted for the children. They included an arts and crafts session where the children made simple 3D models using coloured paper and crayons.

At the end of the programme, Team SUPER presented donated daily necessities such as food ingredients and cleaning products, as well as a cash donation of RM500, to the home. They also presented stationery items to the children for their schooling needs.

Supervisor-in-charge of the Miri Methodist Children’s Home, Wong Huong Hann, expressed gratitude to the Curtin students, saying, “We thank them for spending time with our children. It was a very meaningful gesture and the children really enjoyed the experience. We also thank them for all the donations.”

Meanwhile, Team SUPER team leader Chai Jun Ching remarked, “It was a great pleasure for our team to conduct our community service programme at the home. We believe everyone deserves a chance to succeed in life, and we want the children to have a bright future, just like us. We hope the experience will inspire them to strive to be the best that they can be.”

He added that the team looks forward to conducting more community service programmes, particularly in support of underprivileged children.
