Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 27 December 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has strengthened its academic collaboration with the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS Miri) by conducting a series of impactful seminars designed to equip final-year students with essential skills in thesis report writing and technical communication.
Organised in partnership with i-CATS Miri, the seminars aimed to enhance students’ academic writing capabilities, focusing on critical areas such as literature review, technical report writing, and academic language proficiency.
Dr. Chew Ing Ming from Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering kicked off the seminar series with an in-depth session on conducting literature reviews.
“A well-constructed literature review not only establishes the foundation for a strong thesis but also reflects current trends and informs comprehensive research strategies. This is key to achieving impactful outcomes in final-year projects,” Dr. Chew explained.
The session highlighted the significance of understanding current research trends and developing a strategic approach to building a robust thesis background.
Pang Po Ken, also from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, led a session on effective report formatting. Using real-world examples, Pang provided practical tips and tools for producing high-quality thesis reports efficiently, showcasing both the opportunities and challenges of technical report writing.
In addition to technical writing skills, three experts from Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Work Integrated Learning and Language – Sujatha Krishnan, Adriel Junu, and Elia Bit – delivered an interactive seminar on academic language.
The session focused on critical aspects such as writing concisely and formally, mastering paraphrasing and summarising skills, and ensuring clarity in academic expression. Through hands-on activities, students gained a deeper understanding of how to elevate their project papers to meet high academic standards.
Reflecting on the success of the seminars, Dr. Chew remarked, “These sessions were designed to inspire students to produce outstanding thesis reports while instilling confidence in their technical and language skills. We look forward to future collaborations with i-CATS Miri to further enhance the academic experience for their students.”
