Curtin Malaysia empowers rural educators with financial literacy skills
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 24 September 2025 – In a bid to enhance financial literacy, teachers at SMK Luar Bandar recently gained valuable insights into personal financial management through a seminar organised by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).
The seminar, led by Dr. Tanusree Chakravarty Mukherjee, Lecturer in Accounting and Finance from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, was designed to strengthen financial literacy among educators, equipping them with practical strategies to manage their personal finances while also inspiring them to guide their students toward healthier financial habits.
From budgeting and saving tips to strategies for long-term financial security, Dr. Tanusree introduced engaging and accessible approaches to financial planning. One concept that particularly resonated with participants was the ‘pay yourself first’ strategy, which encourages individuals to prioritise savings before other expenses.
“Financial literacy is crucial in this day and age,” Dr. Tanusree said. “Many Malaysians, especially young people, continue to struggle with money management. By empowering teachers, we are creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the classroom into families and communities.”
The teachers responded enthusiastically, describing the seminar as both eye-opening and practical. “It changed the way I think about saving. I feel better prepared not only for myself but also to help my students develop these essential life skills,” one participant remarked.
The initiative underscores Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges through education and community engagement. By partnering with schools like SMK Luar Bandar, Curtin Malaysia is helping to build financially resilient communities in Sarawak and beyond.
