Curtin Malaysia empowers students and community through financial literacy initiative

Miri, Sarawak – 24 September 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia’s Faculty of Business has wrapped up an innovative learning and teaching project that brought real-world financial literacy to the local community, while simultaneously sharpening students’ soft skills and practical experience.

Led by Associate Dean of External Engagement Yip Ka Yii and supported by lecturers Dr. Ho Jie Min and Dr. Ivy Hii, the initiative involved three student groups tasked with delivering a series of financial literacy talks. Covering essential topics from personal financial management to safeguarding against financial scams, the talks aimed to make financial education accessible and relevant to the local community.

More than just an academic exercise, the project provided the Curtin students with invaluable hands-on experience in knowledge sharing and public speaking. “Our goal was to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application,” said Yip Ka Yii. “Through these community engagements, students not only shared knowledge but also developed critical skills like public speaking, teamwork, and leadership – qualities that are essential in today’s competitive business landscape.”

The project was met with enthusiasm from both students and community members. The students reported a noticeable boost in confidence, particularly in public speaking, while community attendees appreciated the clear and practical advice offered during the sessions.

The initiative underscored Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to developing well-rounded graduates who are equipped with both academic prowess and the soft skills needed to succeed in an increasingly complex business environment. By integrating community engagement into the curriculum, Curtin Malaysia is setting a new standard for experiential learning, ensuring students graduate with a strong foundation for their future careers.
