Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 23 October 2025 – Over 200 students at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) walked away with sharper money smarts and stronger digital defences at the Financial Literacy Roadshow 2025: Jelajah Squad Celik Kewangan, held recently at the university’s Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre.
Organised in conjunction with the national Financial Literacy Month, the event was a collaboration between Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Kuching Regional Office, Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit (AKPK), and Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business – uniting national financial experts to tackle rising financial challenges among youth.
Designed to address the realities of today’s fast-paced digital economy, the roadshow highlighted digital financial literacy, scam awareness, and responsible money management through expert talks, interactive games, and practical activities. The event coordination was led by Professor Pauline Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Business, together with Dr Alpha, Discipline Lead of Finance; Dr Ivy Hii, Associate Dean of External Engagement; and Dr Dhanuskodi, Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, who worked closely with BNM and AKPK to bring the initiative to life.
“Financial literacy is no longer optional; it’s essential,” said Professor Vincent Lee, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, in remarks delivered by Professor Pauline Ho. “As digital platforms transform the way we handle money, we must also equip our students to detect fraud, manage credit, and make sound financial decisions. Events like these are key to building a financially resilient future generation.”
The event featured a series of insightful talks from financial experts. Deena Wati Md Delan, Executive at BNM’s Financial Development & Surveillance Unit, opened the programme with a compelling talk on ‘Digital Financial Literacy & Scams’, highlighting real-world scam tactics and how to avoid falling victim.
Yeo Wee Kiak, Head of AKPK Kuching, offered inspiring yet practical tips on managing finances and avoiding debt in his session, ‘Menggapai Pelangi’ (Reaching for the Rainbow).
Syarinoor bin Sahimi, Manager of BNM Kuching’s Cash Office Unit, engaged the audience with ‘Kenali Wang Anda’ (Know Your Money), a hands-on look at currency security features and how to spot counterfeit notes.
The attendees did more than just sit and listen – they played, competed, and tested their knowledge through interactive quizzes and games, reinforcing key takeaways in a fun, memorable way.
The roadshow was part of Curtin Malaysia’s wider push to embed real-world financial skills into student life, preparing graduates who are not only academically equipped but financially savvy and socially responsible.
