Curtin Malaysia engineering students and Miri YES Branch clinch top honours at National IEM Summit 2025
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 28 August 2025 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has emerged as a big winner at the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) National Summit (Natsum) 2025 in Kuching, with its IEM Student Section (IEM SS) named Outstanding Student Section and the IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri Branch awarded Outstanding YES Branch.
The double win highlights Curtin Malaysia’s growing reputation as a hub for future-ready engineering talent and Miri’s role as an active contributor to Malaysia’s engineering landscape.
The awards were presented at the Natsum 2025 closing dinner and recognition night by Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development), who officiated as guest of honour.
Representing Curtin Malaysia and the Miri engineering community were key faculty members and professional leaders, including Jameson Malang (Teaching Fellow, School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE); Vice Secretary, IEM YES Miri Branch; Advisor, IEM Curtin SS), Dr. Paran Gani (Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Science; Committee Member, IEM YES Miri Branch; Advisor, IEM Curtin SS), Dr. Yong Leong Kong (Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Science; Vice Chairman, IEM YES Miri Branch), and Ir. Meheron Selowara Joo (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Science; Chairman, IEM Miri Branch).
Also present were Lim Chuan Jet, Chairman of IEM YES Miri Branch, Ts. Francis Liaw Zhen Zhen, Immediate Past Chairman of IEM YES Miri Branch, and Ir. Chong Boon Hui, Immediate Past Chairlady of IEM Miri Branch, who joined in celebrating the recognition of Miri’s engineering community on the national stage.
The four-day summit brought together young engineers and students nationwide for a series of impactful activities, including a technical visit to Sarawak Metro’s Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, designed to ease traffic congestion and spur regional growth. Participants also took part in team-building sessions, CSR activities at Sarawak Cultural Village, and inter-branch meetings that fostered stronger ties across Malaysia’s engineering network.
These achievements mark a milestone for Curtin Malaysia’s student engineers, underscoring the university’s commitment to nurturing leaders who not only excel academically but also contribute actively to the profession and the community.
