Curtin Malaysia explores the future of accounting in the AI era

Miri, Sarawak – 20 September 2024 – The future of accounting was brought into sharp focus at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) as nearly 100 enthusiastic undergraduate students gathered for an eye-opening session with Yip Kit Weng, a leading figure in the accounting world.

A Fellow of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Australia and Deputy President of the CPA Australia Division Council in Malaysia, Yip shared invaluable insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the profession.

The event, hosted by the Faculty of Business at Curtin Malaysia, was a wake-up call for aspiring accountants to rethink their career paths in a rapidly changing digital landscape. Yip, who has been at the forefront of industry transformation, captivated the audience with his deep dive into how AI is shifting the role of accountants from mere number crunchers to strategic advisors and decision-makers.

“AI isn’t just a trend; it is reshaping the accounting profession and opening up new avenues for growth and innovation,” Yip stated. He underscored the urgency for future accountants to adapt to technological changes, pursue professional qualifications, and engage in continuous learning to stay competitive. Yip also walked students through the CPA professional programme pathway, highlighting how these qualifications can be a game-changer in their career journeys.

The session sparked a lively dialogue, with students eagerly asking questions and exploring the myriad opportunities that AI and technological advancements bring to the field. “It was an enlightening experience that broadened our students’ perspectives on the future of accounting,” remarked Yip Ka Yii, Associate Dean of External Engagement at the Faculty of Business. “Events like this not only inform but inspire students to explore diverse career paths within the profession.”

Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to linking students with industry leaders and professionals was on full display at this event. By offering students firsthand perspectives on evolving industry trends, the university aims to prepare them to thrive in the dynamic world of accounting.
