Curtin Malaysia Faculty of Business students enliven campus with first-ever Curtin Evening Market

Miri, Sarawak – 20 May 2024 – Eight dynamic students of the Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) successfully organised the first-ever Curtin Evening Market, themed ‘Aram Kitai Lepak’ (Let’s Hang Out), at the campus last Friday.

The event, which was part of the students’ Event Management unit, transformed part of the campus into a lively marketplace, featuring a stage for cultural performances, and 28 vibrant stalls showcasing an array of local and international delicacies, handicrafts, and more.

According to the student organisers – Mary Grace Jun Ngau Wan, Teoh Yong Hong, Emmelia Kharmila Abdullah, Aaron Alexander David, Qahirah Siew Mohd Qhadaffie, Syahirah Abdullah Sabli, Berolin Tindin and Dawn Valilin Dompok, the event was aimed at creating a welcoming campus environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can experience the joy of cultural exchange, aligned with Curtin’s commitment to fostering inclusion and positivity.

“Together, we are building bridges, breaking barriers, and fostering a sense of unity that extends beyond the boundaries of our campus,” said Mary Grace.

The event was officiated by Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister for Transport, Sarawak and Chair of the Curtin Malaysia Management Committee. Also in attendance were Curtin Malaysia’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Vincent Lee, Dean of the Faculty of Business Professor Pauline Ho, and the unit lecturer who is also the faculty Associate Dean of Research and Development, Dr. Tiong Ying Ying.

The market attracted hundreds of attendees, including Curtin Malaysia students, staff, family members, and members of the public, all eager to partake in the festivities.

Dato Sri Lee commended the students for their initiative and creativity in organising the event, highlighting its role in fostering community spirit and showcasing cultural diversity. He said it was a most effective way to promote Curtin Malaysia and expressed hopes that more events of such nature would be held to encourage the public to visit and engage with the campus community.

Professor Lee and Professor Ho also praised the students for their hard work and dedication in bringing the campus community together in such a vibrant and engaging manner.

“This event’s theme ’Aram Kitai Lepak’ encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and cultural diversity that defines our Curtin community. This event is not just a market; it is a celebration of unity and inclusivity. It is a platform where people from all walks of life, regardless of background or nationality, come together to connect, bond, and celebrate our differences,” said Prof. Lee.

The Curtin Evening Market furthermore provided a platform for students to demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills, promote cultural exchange, and engage with the community.

Visitors enjoyed a wide variety of performances, including traditional dances and music by the Orang Ulu Women’s Association of Miri, Tering Community Association of Miri, Kuai Magat Dance Troupe and Sapé Movement; and contemporary music by the Curtin Music Club, while sampling delicious food, appreciating the traditional arts and crafts from different cultures, and exploring a wide variety of unique artisanal products.
