Curtin Malaysia first-year engineering students shine on national stage at Oil & Gas Industry Week
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 6 May 2026 – Three first-year engineering students from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) have made an impressive national debut, clinching First Runner-up in the Technical Infographic Competition at the Oil & Gas Malaya Industrial Week 2026.
Daniel Hii Hao Shan (Energy Engineering), Alexander Voon Jian Hua (Mechanical Engineering), and Amelia Wong (Chemical Engineering) whom supervised by Dr. Adrian Tiong (Programme Coordinator for Energy Engineering, stood out among strong contenders, delivering a compelling technical infographic that blended innovation with real-world relevance.
Adding to the momentum, Hii recently represented Curtin Malaysia at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Asia 2026, gaining firsthand exposure to global industry developments. Drawing on insights from the conference, he highlighted the growing intersection of oil and gas with artificial intelligence and machine learning, an edge that strengthened their competition entry.
Organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Universiti Malaya Student Chapter, the four-day event, held under the theme ‘AI and Emerging Technologies in Energy’, brought together students and industry leaders through forums, competitions, and networking sessions.
Prof Ir. Dr. Stephanie Chan, Head of the Department of Chemical & Energy Engineering, congratulates the team on their remarkable achievement, winning first runner up in their very first year. It reflects their dedication, teamwork and willingness to push boundaries despite being at the beginning of their study journey. This success sets a strong foundation for the greater accomplishment ahead.
