Curtin Malaysia holds virtual information session on educational opportunities and scholarships for Sarawakian students

Miri – 6 April 2022 – The Domestic Student Recruitment Department of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is continuing its roadshow to introduce education and scholarship opportunities for Sarawakian students.

An online session last week for staff of District Education Offices (PPD), principals, teachers, counsellors and representatives from the Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) in Lawas, Limbang, Sibuti and Subis received an encouraging response from those who attended.

The roadshow is being held in response to the call from the Sarawak state government to encourage Sarawakian students, especially Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) leavers to further their studies at state government-owned institutions of higher learning like Curtin Malaysia.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Officer of Curtin Malaysia, Professor Simon Leunig, in his speech welcomed the participation of the representatives of the PPDs, schools and PIBGs and hoped that the information provided by the university would be shared with students in their respective schools, as well as their parents.

The participants were briefed on the degree courses in business, engineering, science and humanities offered at Curtin Malaysia, as well as its foundation studies programme, so that students who are currently sitting the public examination can get relevant information immediately after the examination.

They were also briefed on financial assistance available to students to further their studies at Curtin Malaysia through the Sarawak Foundation’s BP40 Bursary Scheme where Sarawakian Bumiputera students can enjoy subsidised tuition fees.

Furthermore, other Sarawakians who wish to further their studies at Curtin Malaysia, either in a foundation programme or a bachelor’s degree, also have the opportunity to obtain full study loans from the Sarawak Foundation.

As for loan repayment, students only have to repay 25 per cent of the loan amount, subject to their academic performance being maintained at a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50 and above.

Such information sessions will be continued for schools in Bintulu and surrounding districts in the near future to ensure that Sarawakian students, especially SPM 2021 leavers and Form 5 students this year, get comprehensive information to help them decide on study options at Curtin Malaysia.
