Curtin Malaysia hosts career resilience talk for aspiring engineers

Miri, Sarawak – 18 January 2025 — Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted an engaging and empowering industrial talk titled ‘The Graduate Advantage – Skills and Attributes for Career Resilience,’ which left a lasting impact on the 34 Chemistry Course students from its Foundation of Engineering programme. Organised by Curtin Malaysia’s  School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), the event aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry realities.

The session was spearheaded by Cynthia Paul Sebli, Associate Teaching Fellow and chemistry lecturer at SPACE. It featured Samuel Edward Atit, an engineer from Sarawak Shell Berhad as the keynote speaker.

“Students must learn science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to stay competitive,” emphasised Cynthia, highlighting the event’s core mission of preparing students for an ever-evolving workforce. The talk provided a platform for students to gain not only critical knowledge but also the professional connections necessary for success.

Samuel shared his insights on thriving in today’s fast-paced job market, offering a rare glimpse into the world of industry professionals. He emphasised the importance of learning and told students not to have the mindset that four years of a degree is just a waste of time. Because actually, it is a real preparation for the working world, and they should spend time at the university as an opportunity to learn all the basic knowledge and shape their minds to think and solve problems

The speaker presentation was both inspiring and thought-provoking. “The workforce is changing rapidly, and as students, you have the power to shape the future,” he said. “Staying curious, adaptable, and ready to learn will be the key to success in your career. The skills you develop now will prepare you for challenges you may not even foresee yet.”

The one-hour session featured an interactive Q&A segment where students eagerly engaged with Samuel, seeking advice on industry trends, technological advancements, and the skill sets essential for career resilience. Sharing personal anecdotes and practical tips, Samuel encouraged students to embrace adaptability and continuous learning as their superpowers in the face of change.

Many attendees left the event feeling inspired and more confident about their future. Ling Chong Yee, a Foundation of Engineering student, shared, “The talk has helped me make more informed decisions about my career. Hearing directly from an industry expert has given me clarity and a sense of direction.”

Another participant, Owen Fu Shen Yang, praised the relevance of Samuel’s advice. “The speaker shared real-life experiences and lessons from his career journey, which gave us valuable insights. It was eye-opening and highly motivating.”

Associate Professor Fidella Tiew Nga Huong, Dean of SPACE, expressed her gratitude to Samuel and underscored the importance of such events. “This talk is more than just advice; it is about equipping our students with confidence, clarity, and purpose as they step into the workforce,” she said.

As the session concluded, the students left with renewed motivation and a clearer understanding of the steps needed to excel in their future careers. The success of the event reflects Curtin Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to producing industry-ready graduates through innovative and impactful programmes. Also attending the talk is teaching fellow Jameson Malang.
