Curtin Malaysia hosts first-ever nationhood programme, engaging over 200 students and staff

Miri, Sarawak – 24 September 2026 – More than 200 students and staff of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) gathered recently for the university’s first-ever campus-based nationhood programme, Program Khas Aku Kasih Malaysia & Hari Malaysia 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening civic awareness and understanding of Malaysia’s history, diversity and shared aspirations among young Malaysians.

Held in collaboration with Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) under the Prime Minister’s Department, the programme featured interactive sessions and a Nationalism Forum that explored nationhood, patriotism and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), providing students and staff with opportunities to engage with issues central to Malaysia’s development and identity.

Representing Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Learning and Teaching, said the collaboration reflected the university’s commitment to creating meaningful platforms for students to engage with Malaysia’s history, national identity and civic responsibilities.

“Malaysia Day is not merely a celebration of our national identity and character. It is also an opportunity to appreciate the journey that has shaped our nation, value the diversity that forms our strength, and reflect on the shared aspirations that unite Malaysians across generations and backgrounds,” Professor Tang said in his welcoming address.

He said programmes that encourage dialogue on nationhood and MA63 were valuable opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives and engage constructively with national issues.

“As a university, we believe education extends beyond the lecture hall. Understanding our nation’s history, appreciating our diversity and engaging constructively in national issues are essential to shaping a knowledgeable, responsible and caring society,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Faizal Lamat, Director of AKM Negeri Sarawak, said the initiative supported the academy’s ongoing efforts to strengthen patriotism and deepen young Malaysians’ understanding of nationhood and their responsibilities as citizens.

“We want to ensure that students understand their role as citizens and how they can contribute to Malaysia’s aspirations, while supporting Sarawak’s vision of becoming a developed state by 2030 and ensuring no one is left behind,” he said.

Valerie Velina Anaelechi, Head of the General Studies (MPU) Department at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, said the programme provided an important platform for young people to better understand MA63 and its significance to nation-building.

“The programme strengthened appreciation for diversity, mutual respect and unity, encouraging young Malaysians to move forward together while valuing the unique identities that make up our nation,” she said.

A key highlight was the Nationalism Forum, featuring insights from Mohamad Faizal and Valerie, which prompted active participation and discussion among students. The interactive format encouraged participants to consider the role of young Malaysians in shaping the country’s future and contributing to their communities.

The programme also featured an interactive session conducted by Rakael Kosman, Executive Officer of AKM Sarawak, further encouraging students to explore the meaning of nationhood and their responsibilities as citizens.

The inaugural collaboration concluded on a positive note, with strong engagement from the campus community. It also lays the groundwork for future youth-focused initiatives aimed at fostering greater understanding of nationhood, civic responsibility and Malaysia’s shared future at Curtin Malaysia.
