Curtin Malaysia hosts insightful RICS career talk, equipping students for global success in construction

Miri, Sarawak – 22 October 2024 – In a bid to prepare its construction management students for success in the global industry, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently partnered with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) to host an online career talk. This collaboration offered the students exclusive access to expert guidance on building a successful career in surveying and construction, and understanding the value of RICS accreditation – a prestigious benchmark in the built and natural environments.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Maggie Cheng, RICS’s Early Engagement Manager for university programs across the Asia-Pacific region. Cheng’s in-depth talk underscored the growing demand for skilled professionals in the surveying field and the vast career opportunities available through RICS membership.

Cheng captivated the students by outlining the significance of RICS accreditation in opening doors to global career prospects. “RICS accreditation not only sets you apart but also provides a platform for lifelong learning and development within an ever-evolving industry,” she said, highlighting that RICS-certified professionals are globally recognised for upholding the highest standards in land, real estate, construction, and infrastructure development.

The students were particularly drawn to the detailed breakdown of the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) process, a key milestone for those seeking full RICS membership. Cheng also encouraged the students to take advantage of RICS student membership, which offers access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and professional development tools that can significantly enhance their career prospects.

In the interactive Q&A session that followed, students gained personalised insights into how RICS membership can boost their employability and career trajectory, both in Malaysia and internationally. Cheng’s answers addressed a variety of student queries, from the global recognition of RICS credentials to the potential for career advancement across sectors such as sustainable development, urban planning, and digital construction.

The event emphasised RICS’s broader mission to drive positive change in the built and natural environments, highlighting its global standards, commitment to professional development, and use of trusted data. RICS’s influence in shaping the future of the industry through innovation and best practices was a key takeaway for the students.

Dr. Low Wai Wah, Head of Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Built Environment, praised the event as a pivotal moment for students. “This collaboration with RICS provides our students with an invaluable edge in their career preparation. Gaining insights directly from such a respected global body reinforces their understanding of the industry and enhances their professional outlook,” she remarked.

The online career talk proved to be an enriching experience for students, offering them a clearer path towards professional excellence and global opportunities in the built environment.
