Curtin Malaysia ignites innovation with Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Challenge

Miri, Sarawak – 29 July 2024 – In a spectacular display of creativity and environmental stewardship, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted the Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Challenge at MYY Mall here, captivating the audience with visionary ideas and eco-friendly initiatives.

The event, a vibrant collaboration within the university, saw contributions from esteemed academic staff members including Dr. Fayrene Chieng Yew Leh, Dr. Tiong Ying Ting, Dr. Tan Yin Ling, Ir. Jenney Ngu Lim Song, and Hii Kiew Ling, whose efforts were instrumental in orchestrating this success.

Open to all students in Miri, the competition attracted 18 passionate participants, culminating in a dynamic showcase of their innovative spirit.

According to Dr. Tan Yin Ling, Programme Coordinator of Environmental Engineering, the competition required the students to form dynamic teams to develop business ideas focused on environmental sustainability, particularly through the use of recycled materials. Besides creating detailed business plans, the teams benefited from comprehensive workshops on sustainable entrepreneurship, which equipped them with essential skills to pitch their concepts to judges and the public.

“The event offered a platform not only for the students to showcase their innovation and projects, but also offered an opportunity to secure funding for their startup ventures,” said Dr. Tan.

The teams received invaluable mentorship from entrepreneurship and sustainability experts such as Bryan Chia, Managing Director of Eye One Recycle, and Mandy Chen, MYY Learning Hub Coordinator. Dr. Tan, a certified professional coach by the International Coach Federation, also provided coaching sessions, ensuring the students were well-prepared to present their projects.

The event was a triumph, with participants like Emily Yu Pui Man emphasising the importance of such competitions. “These events inspire us to explore new ideas and techniques prioritizing environmental sustainability, ultimately contributing to a greener future,” Emily remarked.

Melanie Khor Yii Ying, another enthusiastic participant, reflected on the event’s impact on their presentation skills. “Engaging with a diverse audience was crucial. We learned to build trust and effectively communicate our ideas. One memorable experience was convincing a skeptical child of our product’s value, which greatly enhanced our showcasing abilities,” Melanie shared.
