Curtin Malaysia inspires future engineers through STEM initiative at SMK Dato Permaisuri

Miri, Sarawak – 9 July 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently captivated Form Five students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato Permaisuri with dynamic STEM activities designed to ignite their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

This hands-on event featured immersive learning experiences in water engineering, including practical demonstrations of water filtration and coagulation methods. The initiative aimed to introduce students to vital engineering concepts in an engaging and interactive manner.

Dr. Paran Anak Gani, a lecturer in Curtin Malaysia’s Civil and Construction Engineering Department, kicked off the day with an interactive session on water filtration principles and processes. The students eagerly participated, building and testing their water filters, and gaining a deep appreciation for the engineering techniques that ensure clean water.

Following this, the students explored the coagulation method, crucial for removing suspended particles from water. This session shed light on the essential chemical and physical principles of effective water treatment solutions.

During the event, Dr. Tan Yin Ling, Programme Coordinator of Environmental Engineering, and Carrie Ho Lee Ing, a senior lecturer of civil and construction engineering, showcased the diverse Civil and Environmental Engineering programmes at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science. They emphasised the university’s unique offerings, including world-class facilities, an industry-relevant curriculum, and a vibrant campus life, all of which prepare students to tackle global engineering challenges.

“Through events like this, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists,” said Dr. Muhammad Noor Hazwan bin Jusoh, lecturer at the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering. “By providing hands-on experiences and showcasing the exciting possibilities within STEM fields, we can ignite their passion for learning and innovation.”

The students also learned about various scholarship opportunities, internships, and career support services available at Curtin Malaysia, ensuring they have the resources to excel in their academic and professional endeavours.

Curtin Malaysia remains dedicated to fostering excellence in STEM education and nurturing young talent. Through ongoing outreach and engagement, the university strives to make a lasting impact on the community and advance the fields of engineering and environmental sciences. This initiative underscores Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to inspiring future engineers and scientists by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to innovate and succeed.
