Curtin Malaysia inspires Sibu students to pursue STEM futures
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 7 October 2025 – Hundreds of secondary school students in Sibu got a glimpse into how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can shape their future when Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) conducted a series of inspiring workshops at SMK Chung Hua, SMK Methodist, and Woodlands International School recently.
The workshops, led by Sibu-born Dr. Yong Leong Kong of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, combined thought-provoking talks with hands-on activities to ignite curiosity and expand students’ career horizons in STEM.
Drawing on his roots and global perspective, Dr. Yong created a lively, relatable learning experience. He highlighted how Sarawak’s growth depends on engineering innovations, from green energy and artificial intelligence to digital manufacturing and smart city development.
“Engineers are not just implementers of technology; they are the cornerstone of Sarawak’s economic transformation and social progress,” Dr. Yong said, stressing that more local talent is urgently needed to drive landmark projects such as the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam and Sarawak’s green energy agenda.
The students were also given a taste of real-world problem-solving in a practical buoyancy design challenge, sparking lively discussions and questions about engineering pathways. Many expressed that the workshops not only deepened their understanding of engineering but also inspired them to consider careers in the field.
The initiative comes at a pivotal time, with the Sarawak government set to introduce free higher education in 2026 for Sarawakians in key fields including engineering, computer science, law, healthcare, and finance. This bold policy is expected to strengthen the state’s talent pipeline and open new opportunities for aspiring students.
As a Sarawak government-owned institution and Curtin University’s largest global campus, in addition to being a leading hub for engineering education in Borneo, Curtin Malaysia continues to play a central role in this mission. Its Faculty of Engineering offers a wide range of accredited programmes, including Civil and Construction, Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic, Mechatronics, Chemical, and Energy Engineering, designed to blend theory with practical application and prepare graduates to compete globally.
