Curtin Malaysia launches Child Protection Advocacy Programme with mural and community outreach

Miri, Sarawak – 7 October 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has taken an artistic yet impactful approach to child protection advocacy, with the unveiling of a striking mural to mark the launch of the Child Protection Advocacy Programme at SMK Taman Tunku. The mural, a bold symbol of hope and safety, was created by five Curtin Malaysia students, underscoring the university’s commitment to social responsibility and child welfare.

Under the guidance of General Studies Department lecturers Valerie Velina Anaelechi and Farahezza Hairon Nizar, and led by student Erik Lai Yi Zhang, the mural serves as a vibrant reminder of the importance of community involvement in protecting children’s rights. This powerful piece is not just art; it represents the collective effort needed to safeguard the next generation.

The programme, held in collaboration with the Welfare Department (JKM), Royal Malaysia Police Force (PDRM), and the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), attracted over 300 participants, including families, educators, and local officials.

Officiating the event, Mohd Iswandy Abang Hashim, member of Miri Division Child Welfare Team representing Datuk Dr. Ripin Lamat, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development II (Entrepreneur Development), praised the initiative for addressing critical issues of child safety and protection within the community.

Key messages promoted during the event included the importance of the national care hotline, Talian Kasih 15999, which offers vital support for cases of child abuse, domestic violence, counselling, and issues related to homelessness and welfare. Participants were urged to make use of this lifeline, which plays a crucial role in supporting at-risk groups and ensuring child protection across Sarawak.

In addition to the mural, the programme featured a series of interactive talks and exhibitions that engaged the community on pressing child protection issues. One notable session was led by Inspector Nurul Ashikin of PDRM Miri, who delivered an eye-opening presentation on bullying, its devastating impact on victims, and strategies for prevention in schools and online spaces.

Participants also had the opportunity to explore booths hosted by JKM, LPPKN, and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), where experts offered resources on topics ranging from teenager well-being and reproductive health to drug abuse prevention. These booths provided practical tools and guidance for families and caregivers, empowering them to better protect children and promote safer communities.

The Child Protection Advocacy Programme first initiated by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM)  is a reminder that safeguarding children is a shared responsibility, and Curtin Malaysia, together with its partners, is determined to lead the way in raising awareness and advocating for vulnerable groups.
