Curtin Malaysia lecturers inspire young minds at Miri Methodist Children’s Home

Miri, Sarawak – 15 August 2024 – A dedicated team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) made a significant impact on the lives of children at the Miri Methodist Children’s Home by providing free mentoring and tutoring for the children over the course of three months from March to May this year.

This outreach initiative, part of Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary celebrations, was spearheaded by Dr. Lynn Ling Yew Hua, Dr. Evelyn Chiong Tung, Dr. Ho Jie Min, and Wendy Law Li Ling. The team delivered personalised educational support aimed at empowering the children and enhancing their academic journeys. This initiative underscores Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to community service and engagement, fostering a culture of giving back.

“In celebration of our 25 years of establishment in Malaysia, we are proud to engage in meaningful community initiatives that reflect our commitment to making a positive impact,” stated Dr. Ling. “By offering our time and expertise to the children at the Miri Methodist Children’s Home, we hope to inspire and empower them to realise their full potential.”

The mentoring and tutoring sessions, spanning a variety of subjects including mathematics, science, language, art, and social studies, were tailored to meet the individual needs and interests of each child. Dr. Ling highlighted that these sessions not only aimed to improve academic skills but also to foster critical thinking and holistic development.

“The collaboration between Curtin Malaysia and the Miri Methodist Children’s Home exemplifies our dedication to giving back to the community and forging meaningful partnerships for social good,” Dr. Ling added. “Through this initiative, we aim to instil confidence, impart knowledge, and cultivate a love for learning among the children.”

Shirley Liew, a representative from the Miri Methodist Children’s Home, expressed profound gratitude, stating, “We are deeply grateful to Curtin Malaysia for their generosity and commitment to supporting our children. Their involvement exemplifies the spirit of compassion and solidarity, and we are confident that this partnership will greatly benefit our children academically and personally.”

As Curtin Malaysia marks its significant anniversary milestone, it invites the community to join in supporting the educational aspirations of these children. By working together, the university believes that a brighter future can be paved, empowering every child to dream, learn, and succeed.
