Curtin Malaysia Library empowers vocational students with information literacy skills
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 23 September 2025 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is extending its educational impact beyond campus, with its Library team recently conducting an Information Literacy Workshop for 65 students at Miri Vocational College (Kolej Vokasional Miri).
The workshop, led by Curtin Malaysia librarians Nora Hii and Jackie Richard, introduced the students to the six core steps of information literacy – task definition, information-seeking strategies, resource location and access, information use, synthesis, and evaluation. These critical skills help students not only excel academically but also make more informed decisions in their daily lives.
Importantly, the session also highlighted the role of information literacy in the ethical and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI), a skill set increasingly vital in today’s digital-first world.
“This initiative is part of Curtin Malaysia Library’s ongoing outreach to schools across Miri, designed to give young people a stronger foundation for their future studies and careers,” said Hii.
The programme also included a special session by Samson Philip, Curtin Malaysia’s Manager for Student Recruitment and Conversion, who spoke to graduating students about opportunities at Curtin Malaysia and pathways to undergraduate studies.
The workshop received strong engagement from the students, who expressed appreciation for the chance to gain new perspectives on how information literacy supports lifelong learning, career readiness, and responsible technology use.
Through initiatives like this, Curtin Malaysia continues to strengthen ties with local schools while empowering the next generation with skills essential for success in higher education and beyond.
