Curtin Malaysia organising information session tour to promote education and scholarship opportunities for Sarawakian students

Miri – 18 March 2022 – The Domestic Student Recruitment Department of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is organising an information session tour to promote education and scholarship opportunities for Sarawakian students. The first session for principals, teacher advisors, counselors and representatives of Parent Teacher Associations (PIBG) in Miri, which was held online earlier this week, received an encouraging response from secondary schools around the city.

The initiative was in response to the call from the Sarawak state government for Sarawakian Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) school leavers to further their studies at state-owned institutions of higher learning.

Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig, in his welcoming speech during the session, welcomed the participation of the representatives and expressed hopes that the information conveyed would be shared with the students of their respective schools and their parents.

During the session, the participants were briefed on the wide range of courses in business, engineering, science and the humanities offered at Curtin Malaysia, as well as its foundation programmes, which students who are currently sitting for public examinations would like to know most about after completing their examinations.

They were also briefed on financial assistance for students to further their studies at Curtin Malaysia, including the Sarawak Foundation’s BP40 Bursary Scheme where Sarawakian Bumiputera students enjoy subsidised tuition fees.

It was also disclosed that other Sarawakians who wish to further their studies at Curtin Malaysia, either in foundation programmes or bachelor’s degrees, can apply for full study loans from the Sarawak Foundation.

As for loan repayment, students need only pay 25 per cent of their loan amount, subject to them maintaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50 and above.

The information session tour will be extended to schools in Bintulu, Limbang and Lawas in the near future to ensure that Sarawakian students, especially SPM 2021 leavers and students in Form 5 this year, get the information they need to make informed decisions to study at Curtin Malaysia.
