Curtin Malaysia sparks entrepreneurial spirit among secondary school students through Business Start-Up Challenge
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 1 July 2025 – In an effort to spark entrepreneurial passion among Sarawak’s youth, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) brought its dynamic Business Start-Up Challenge to Riam Hill International Secondary School and Pei Min Middle School, energising classrooms with innovation, creativity and real-world business thinking.
Spearheaded by Dr. Ho Jie Min, a lecturer in Management and Marketing at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, the outreach programme saw enthusiastic participation from secondary school students eager to test their business acumen.
Working in teams, the students used LEGO bricks and paper materials to build product prototypes, which they then pitched in high-pressure presentation sessions, mimicking the real-life startup experience. From eco-friendly inventions to tech-inspired solutions, the students delivered a wide range of imaginative business ideas that demonstrated both critical thinking and entrepreneurial flair.
Teachers and school administrators praised the programme for its hands-on approach and tangible learning outcomes, noting how it inspired the students to collaborate, problem-solve and communicate like true innovators.
“We want to help students connect what they learn in the classroom with the kind of creative problem-solving needed in the real world,” said Dr. Ho. “This challenge is aimed at cultivating future-ready skills, in a fun and engaging way.”
The initiative is part of Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and educational outreach, aligning with its mission to shape the next generation of business leaders and changemakers in Sarawak and beyond.
