Curtin Malaysia strengthens media relations through bowling friendly event
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 27 November 2025 – Laughter, cheers, and the rumble of pins set the tone at Megalanes East Miri on Tuesday night as Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) hosted ‘The Big Roll: Curtin Malaysia x Media Bowling Friendly.’
The lively event turned the bowling alley into a colourful networking arena, bringing together 35 media practitioners and university leaders and staff for an evening that blended sport, camaraderie, and partnership building.
Media representatives from leading organisations – including TVSarawak, Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo, See Hua Daily News, Sin Chiew Daily News, RTM Miri, UKAS Miri, and the Information Department – joined Curtin Malaysia’s leadership for the friendly showdown.
In his welcome address, Professor Vincent Lee, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, said the night was designed to move beyond the usual formalities.
“Tonight is deliberately different. It’s our chance to set aside notebooks and recorders and simply enjoy each other’s company. The media are the vital link connecting our campus to the community, the nation, and the world.”
Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii, who also sits on the Curtin Malaysia Council, reinforced the value of such collaborations.
“Curtin Malaysia is a key partner in Miri’s development. The media amplifies that progress. This event is a strategic investment in a partnership that benefits our entire community,” he remarked in his speech delivered by Miri City Councillor Sean Huang.
The competition was light-hearted yet spirited, with teams cheering one another on – an atmosphere that underscored the event’s mission of strengthening relationships. During the closing ceremony, Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, noted, “Tonight was not just about bowling; it was about bonding. These moments deepen the ties between our university and the media partners who share our story.”
Guest of honour Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister for Transport Sarawak and Senadin Assemblyman, commended Curtin Malaysia for the initiative. “Events like this spark community connection. They break down barriers and create friendships beyond the formal setting.”
Also in attendance were Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Teaching and Learning; Professor Roy Rillera Marzo, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences; Nicholas Leong, Manager of Corporate Affairs; and other academic and professional staff of the university.
The night wrapped up with a prize presentation, celebrating not only the top bowlers but also the strengthened collaboration between Curtin Malaysia and the media fraternity.
