Curtin Malaysia students discover grape farming secrets in Miri
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 14 November 2024 – Twenty-five Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) students recently experienced an eye-opening learning trip to a local grape farm in Luak, exploring the unexpected success of tropical grape farming in Sarawak’s climate.
Organised by the Curtin Buddhist Fellowship, the visit offered the students an exciting blend of hands-on agricultural education and the chance to connect with local sustainability practices.
Guided by Associate professor Wong Kwong Soon, Head of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, and lecturers Dr. Tay Ai Chen, Dr. Paran Gani, and Dr. Sebastian Lai from the department, the students gained unique insights into the challenges and rewards of cultivating grapes in Malaysia, discovering a surprising variety of grapes such as Jupiter and Dickson that thrive without chemicals.
Kynberley Yong Yung Xin, an accounting and finance student from Sabah, found the experience deeply enriching. “The farm staff shared their expertise on everything from the selection of grape varieties to sustainable cultivation methods,” she said. “Seeing the journey from vine to table was fascinating, and tasting the fresh, local grapes was a highlight.”
Ivy Kuan, a civil and construction engineering student from Miri, was equally inspired: “I never imagined grapes could be grown in our tropical climate. Seeing the farm’s environmentally conscious approach to cultivation opened my eyes to the potential for sustainable agriculture right here in Miri.”
Dr. Tay, the club advisor, underscored the importance of such field experiences. “These trips expand our students’ perspectives, allowing them to appreciate the intricacies of local agriculture while fostering teamwork and professional growth. They not only learn about grapes; they learn about commitment and community.”
The trip has left a lasting impression on students, who now return with a newfound respect for Sarawak’s agricultural ingenuity.
