Curtin Malaysia students explore conservation and tourism at Miri Crocodile Farm

Miri, Sarawak – 1 October 2025 – Students from the Faculty of Business of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently went beyond the classroom to experience wildlife conservation and tourism in action during an educational field trip to the Miri Crocodile Farm at Kuala Baram.

The visit, led by the Faculty’s Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching and Senior Lecturer in Management and Marketing Dr. Fayrene Chieng and Discipline Lead for Marketing and Tourism Programmes and Lecturer in Management and Marketing Dr. Ho Jie Min, gave the students an up-close look at one of Northern Sarawak’s most prominent wildlife attractions while deepening their understanding of how conservation, education, and tourism can go hand in hand.

The students explored the farm’s diverse range of wildlife species and gained valuable insights into how the park manages its dual role as a conservation site and a tourism destination. The experience not only strengthened their grasp of sustainable wildlife tourism and park management but also allowed them to see how theory translates into real-world practices.

Many students described the trip as both academically enriching and personally rewarding, offering a refreshing balance of hands-on learning and stress relief from their studies. They also came away with a stronger appreciation of Sarawak’s unique biodiversity and the important role such attractions play in supporting the state’s tourism industry.

“This kind of experiential learning is invaluable because it connects students directly with the industry they are preparing to enter,” said Dr. Chieng. “It equips them with a deeper awareness of environmental sustainability while sharpening their practical skills for future careers.”

The initiative reflects Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to industry-linked and field-based learning, ensuring its graduates are well-prepared for careers in tourism, environmental management, and related sectors.
