Curtin Malaysia students explore real-world workplace safety laws at 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 16 June 2025 – Students from Curtin University Malaysia’s Faculty of Business undertaking the Occupational Safety and Health Law (BLAW2011) unit recently took their classroom learning beyond textbooks, engaging directly with real-world workplace safety practices during the university’s campus-wide observance of the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
Held at the university’s Lecture Theatre Foyer and themed ‘Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work’, the event offered a dynamic, hands-on platform for students to explore how legal frameworks underpin modern occupational health and safety standards.
The initiative was led by Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) students from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Faculty’s General Studies Department, and Curtin Malaysia’s Student First Place Activation team. It brought together students from multiple disciplines for an interactive learning experience.
Dr. Mohammad Belayet Hossain, who coordinates the BLAW2011 unit, described the event as a vital component of experiential learning. “We want our students to not only understand safety legislation theoretically but to also see how it is applied in practice, especially in today’s digital and AI-enhanced work environments,” he said.
Under Dr. Belayet’s guidance, the students visited themed booths covering physical safety, ergonomics, chemical and biological hazards, psychosocial risks, and food safety, with interactive elements and digital demonstrations showing how AI is reshaping safety compliance in various industries.
“This event bridges theory with practice. Our students witnessed firsthand how legal obligations translate into workplace safety protocols,” said Dr. Belayet.
One student commented, “It was eye-opening to see how the legal aspects we study come alive in practical workplace scenarios. The booths made the laws feel real and relevant.”
The event highlighted Curtin Malaysia’s strong commitment to industry-linked education, cross-faculty collaboration, and the development of job-ready graduates. It also aligns with the university’s ongoing efforts to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to good health, well-being, and decent work conditions.
