Curtin Malaysia students gain insider insights on financial reporting from industry expert
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 29 October 2025 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) students were given a rare behind-the-scenes look at the realities of financial reporting quality during a guest lecture by Philip Lau, Principal of Philip Lau & Co., on 6 October.
The session, titled “Financial Reporting Quality,” went beyond textbook theory, offering the business students practical insights into auditing, investment decision-making, and the critical importance of accurate financial reporting.
Drawing from years of corporate experience, Lau shared real-world examples of data manipulation, highlighting potential loopholes and the severe consequences for businesses.
The lecture was highly interactive, sparking dynamic discussions as students probed Lau on industry practices and challenges. Many described the session as an eye-opener, effectively bridging academic concepts with the demands of professional practice.
Dr. Mohammad Abdul Matin Chowdhury, Lecturer in Finance, said the lecture was part of the Faculty of Business’s FNCE2003 unit. “This collaboration allows students to see how theory translates into practice. Learning directly from an expert like Philip Lau is invaluable in preparing them for the realities of the corporate world,” he said.
Professor Pauline Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Business, emphasised the strategic importance of such initiatives. “Our goal is to equip students with both academic knowledge and practical skills. Inviting seasoned professionals like Philip Lau enriches our teaching, exposes students to diverse perspectives, and reinforces the critical importance of financial reporting quality,” she noted.
The initiative was supported by Curtin Malaysia’s Learning & Teaching (L&T) programme and the Department of Accounting and Finance, dedicated to creating transformative educational experiences through active industry collaboration. With more industry experts scheduled to speak in upcoming semesters, Curtin Malaysia continues to position itself as a hub where academic learning meets real-world expertise, preparing students to excel as global business leaders.
