Curtin Malaysia students gain real-world insights into waste management at E-Concern
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 20 September 2025 – Over 12 students from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently stepped out of the classroom and into the real world of environmental engineering during an educational visit to E-Concern (M) Sdn. Bhd., one of Miri’s leading environmental service providers.
Organised by Professor Tony Hadibarata of Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, the visit formed part of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management unit, giving students first-hand exposure to how industry experts tackle one of today’s most pressing global challenges – managing solid and hazardous waste sustainably.
At E-Concern, the students toured its state-of-the-art facilities, observed cutting-edge technologies for hazardous waste treatment, and learned about integrated systems for handling, transporting, and recycling e-waste and chemical waste. They also gained insights into regulatory compliance, resource recovery, and emerging waste minimisation strategies.
For many of them, the visit was eye-opening. “By interacting with industry practitioners and seeing how systems are applied in practice, our students were able to connect theoretical knowledge with practical realities,” said Prof. Hadibarata. “This kind of experience prepares them for professional practice and inspires them to think critically about sustainable solutions.”
The students highlighted the scale of operations needed to ensure community and environmental safety, while also recognising the ethical and social responsibilities tied to their future profession. Some remarked that the visit deepened their interest in pursuing careers in environmental engineering and sustainability.
Beyond technical knowledge, the trip provided valuable networking opportunities. The students engaged with environmental professionals, asked questions, and discussed industry challenges and opportunities – experience that will strengthen their confidence and employability after graduation.
The collaboration with E-Concern reflects Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to experiential learning and industry engagement, ensuring its graduates are not only academically strong but also equipped with practical skills to address real-world environmental issues.
The visit concluded with a group reflection, where the students shared ideas on how what they had learned could inspire future research and innovation in their studies.
