Curtin Malaysia students gear up for graduation and the future

Miri – 22 April 2022 – Over 200 soon-to-graduate students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) this week attended pre-graduation sessions designed to prepare them for graduation and entering the workforce. They were also briefed on registration with professional bodies and the option to pursue postgraduate studies at Curtin Malaysia.

The students, 122 of whom attended physically and another 92 online, were from the business, humanities and health sciences, and engineering and science faculties.

The sessions marked the close of the students’ final semester and three to four years of undergraduate study, depending on programme. They included a separate briefing session for Faculty of Engineering and Science students and a combined session for Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences students. These were followed by a session for all the students where they were briefed on the requirements for graduation and registration for their graduation ceremonies.

A forum with five Curtin Malaysia alumni was also held where the alumni shared the significance of their Curtin education and qualifications in their professions, and their experiences transitioning from being university students to becoming young professionals. They also talked about the current situation in their respective industries, including career prospects for new graduates and how the global pandemic has affected the job market.

Among the alumni were Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Management and Master of Philosophy in Management graduate Ting Qian Hui who is now pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Curtin Malaysia, Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Marketing graduate and a premier relationship manager with HSBC Malaysia, Kenny Hii Shin Yao, and Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering graduate and now a technical service engineer with Lotte Chemical Titan Malaysia, Jimmy Tan Hong Koon.

The panel also included Shell Malaysia Exploration and Production (SMEP) environment advisor Johny Wong who graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering, and Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication graduate and production assistant with Horizn Digital, Herbert Ho Chong Teck.

In his speech during the session, Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig congratulated the students on the completion of their undergraduate studies under trying circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said students who have studied through the pandemic will have acquired particular skills that they can transfer effectively to their workplaces in the future.

“As part of the global Curtin University, we are very proud of our graduates from all over the world, and as you go out to work or continue your studies at Curtin Malaysia, we are sure you are going to have a whole lot of new experiences that your time at Curtin Malaysia will stand you in good stead for,” he added.

Also in attendance were Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences Professor Vincent Lee, Dean of the Faculty of Business Professor Andreas Zins, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Deputy Dean of Research and Development and Director of the Curtin Malaysia Graduate School Professor Agus Saptoro, and staff of the faculties and graduations and alumni services offices.
