Curtin Malaysia students get hands-on chemistry insights at SGS Lab in Miri
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 21 January 2025 – Thirty Foundation in Engineering and Science students from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently got a firsthand look at how chemistry drives real-world innovation during a visit to SGS Petrotechnical Inspection (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Miri.
Organised by Cynthia Paul Sebli, Associate Teaching Fellow and chemistry lecturer from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), the visit aimed to bridge the gap between textbook theories and their real-world applications. Accompanied by fellow SPACE lecturer Bejay Anak Ugon, the students explored SGS’s cutting-edge laboratories and learned how industrial leaders maintain product quality and safety.
“The visit was not just about seeing how things work; it was about understanding the ‘why’ behind them,” Cynthia explained. “The students saw how their classroom knowledge translates into ensuring quality control, testing, and product safety at a global scale. It was also an excellent opportunity for them to explore career paths in chemistry-focused industries.”
SGS Senior Operations Manager Bobby Moses and his team, including Euanice Anak Teck Choi, Gabriella Annie Kiyong, Michelle Martin, Cynthia Keranti Anak Kamar, and Flora Anak Joseph, warmly welcomed the group. Bobby remarked that it was SGS’s first official student visit – and its largest yet.
After an engaging safety briefing by Gabriella, Bobby introduced SGS’s operations, highlighting the company’s pivotal role in quality assurance and its impact on industries worldwide. Divided into smaller groups, the students then toured the laboratories under the expert guidance of SGS staff who offered detailed explanations of the laboratories’ processes.
For many of the students, the experience was transformative.
“It was fascinating to see advanced processes and expertise in action,” shared Decebatrisyia Ellysia Rabaha. “The team’s professionalism and openness made the visit both educational and inspiring.”
Sammy Wei Qi Ting echoed the sentiment. “It was exciting to see how machines and processes work together to create everyday products while adhering to environmental safety standards. The staff’s friendliness and their willingness to answer our questions made it a memorable first site visit.”
Bobby expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that the visit marked an important step in nurturing local talent. “We are thrilled to host Curtin Malaysia’s students. It is inspiring to see their curiosity and passion for learning.”
