Curtin Malaysia students harness AI and innovation to champion workplace safety on World Safety Day
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 9 June 2025 – Future health and safety leaders at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently took centre stage with a tech-focused celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025, transforming the campus into a hub of innovation and awareness around occupational safety and health (OSH).
Organised by Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) students under the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, the event went beyond tradition. With the global theme ‘Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work’, the students showcased a series of interactive, educational booths exploring real-world safety hazards through the lens of emerging technologies.
From digital simulations to AI-powered risk assessments, attendees experienced firsthand how the next generation of professionals is reimagining workplace safety.
“This is not merely an event, it is a living lab,” said Dr. Voltisa Thartori, Head of the Faculty’s Department of Health Sciences, who officiated the event. “Students aren’t just learning safety principles; they are applying them, leading initiatives, and connecting with the community in creative ways.”
A joint effort between the Faculty’s Health Sciences and General Studies departments, and Curtin Malaysia’s Student First Place Activation Department, the event showcased strong collaboration between academic staff and student leaders. Key figures included HSE lecturers Josfirin Uding Rangga and Dr. Edza Aria Wikurendra, General Studies Associate Lecturer Nancy Ujan, and Student First Place Activation Manager Nomiday Dajie Linggie.
Interactive booths tackled five key categories of occupational hazards – physical, chemical, psychosocial, biological, and ergonomic – through games, quizzes, and immersive demonstrations. The event not only engaged students but also drew interest from external visitors, including representatives from Riam Institute of Technology (Riamtec).
To amplify engagement, a Curtin Mini Bazaar added a festive atmosphere, encouraging broader student participation while supporting local entrepreneurship.
“This experience helped us understand safety beyond the classroom,” said Chiew Jia Hao, a second-year HSE student and event co-chair. “We were empowered to create, lead, and share knowledge with the entire campus community.”
Ashley Anak Dominic, the event chair, added, “Organising this event was both a leadership challenge and a meaningful chance to highlight the importance of safety in our everyday lives.”
