Curtin Malaysia students shine in Capstone Computing projects

Miri – 7 December 2022 – Three teams of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) computing students recently received Best Project Awards from the University for their Capstone Computing Projects (CCP).

CCPs are undertaken by teams of computing students as their final year projects, giving them the opportunity to execute software engineering projects in consultation with members of the academic staff, industry partners and designated clients.

Awards are presented to the best teams at the end of each semester. In the latest Semester 2, 2022 round, 30 students presented their project outcomes and 11 students in the three teams were awarded for presenting the most outstanding projects.

Present at the awards ceremony were Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Associate Professor Ling Huo Chong, and lecturer in electrical and computer engineering Dr. Saaveethya Sivakumar, who coordinates and supervises the CCPs at Curtin Malaysia.

Among the winners was a team comprising Xin Yun Loh, Ayman Osama Ahmed Daoud Hamada and Colin Kah Kiee Tan. Their project, ‘An Interactive Animated 3D Human Visualisation’ was for clients Dr. Garenth Lim King Hann and Jonathon Pang of Ai3D PLT.

Xin Yun said the CCP allowed her to get a taste of the working environment, collaborating with people of different backgrounds. It also allowed her to apply theories and concepts learnt in her studies to a real-life project.

Dr. Lim commended the team for their hard work, saying that they were able to deliver their software solution for the company is a relatively short time.

“As we are living in a new era of digital technology, the development of 3D visualisation is crucial to demonstrate 3D models, especially human models. Our company provides solutions for markerless joint capture in sports and the team’s 3D human visualisation model will enable more study in biomechanics and measurement,” said Dr. Lim.

A second project team’s project designing a data management system for Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science. The team comprised Kyu Seok Yeum, Jing Ru Ng, James Siew Huei Wong and Chian Hui Lee.

According to Chian Hui, the ‘FOES Data Management System’ was the first project by students for the faculty. She said the team anticipates the system will enhance the efficiency of the faculty administration, particularly in data management which will be in a more effective and secure manner.

Faculty Administrative Assistant Jacqueline Noriyati Martin and IT Engineering Officer Sheikh Zaffrullah agreed that the system would help the administration of daily tasks much easier. They said all information and data can be stored in one place, making it easier for retrieval later. Furthermore, the system design is simple and very user-friendly and can be easily adapted for use by other faculties as well.

The third winning team with their project ‘Miri Smart City Central Monitoring System’ for client Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS) comprised Cindy Ji Ping Lee, Gareld Jiah Sien Kuan, Lee Hong Yuan and Calmen Kai Fong Chia. Gareld said their project involved considerable collaboration with SAINS and it was a pleasant experience working with their IT experts.

CCP projects typically involve the design, implementation and testing of software systems and the students work in teams to execute the project objectives. Management activities are also undertaken to give them the opportunity to develop project management skills. A range of software engineering tools are applied to resolve problems arising during the software development process.

CCPs are conducted over two semesters. In the first semester, students identify and develop project proposals, then work towards developing their software prototypes in the second semester. As part of the assessment criteria, they are required to do presentations on their project outcomes to the academics and clients.
