Curtin Malaysia to host 2nd Borneo Infrastructure Symposium 2024 on 13 December

Miri, Sarawak – 10 December 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is set to host the 2nd Borneo Infrastructure Symposium 2024 on December 13, bringing together approximately 100 key stakeholders from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Indonesia to discuss the future of sustainable infrastructure development in the region.

Organised in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch, the symposium will welcome representatives from the Public Works Department (JKR), Sarawak Energy, local councils, Northern Sarawak Water Board (LAKU) Sdn. Bhd., consultants, contractors, and other industry leaders.

Themed ‘Sustainable Infrastructure Development for Borneo’, the event will be officiated by Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works, Malaysia, signalling its importance in shaping the infrastructure agenda for Borneo’s rapid development.

Ir. Meheron Selowara Joo, Organising Chairman and IEM Miri Branch Chairman, highlighted the symposium’s role as a vital platform for exchanging ideas on the technical, economic, and environmental challenges of infrastructure development across Borneo.

“We aim to inspire meaningful conversations on creating viable and sustainable infrastructure solutions, with input from experts representing government, industry, and academia,” said Ir. Meheron, also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Curtin Malaysia.

Prominent speakers, including government leaders and industry experts, will provide diverse perspectives on sustainable development, including Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister for Transport, Sarawak; Datuk Ismawi Ismuni, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA); Ir. Chin Lee Tuck, Chairman of the Engineer Division, The Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA); Dr. Ir. Resdiansyah, Chief of Transportation, Nusantara Capital Authority, Indonesia; Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, Group Chief Executive Officer, Sarawak Energy Berhad; Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob Jaafar, Chief Executive Officer of Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd.; and Br. Gs. Ts. Ir. Zaid Iskandar Jaraiee, Senior Manager Operation of LAKU Management Sdn. Bhd..

The symposium will culminate in a technical visit to the Miri Port Authority on December 14, offering participants a close look at the proposed phase one dredging and associated works at the Batang Baram Delta.

Guided by Ir. Pui Syn Kong, a seasoned marine development expert with over 40 years of experience, attendees will gain insights into innovative methods of port operations, construction, and maintenance. Ir. Pui, who is a Director of Serumpun Konsultant, has led major marine development projects in Borneo. He will provide an in-depth overview of the ongoing project and its significance to Borneo’s maritime infrastructure.

The 2nd Borneo Infrastructure Symposium 2024 aims to not only spark innovation in infrastructure development but also foster collaboration among stakeholders across borders. This cross-regional dialogue underscores the shared vision of sustainable growth for Borneo, ensuring that its infrastructure supports both environmental stewardship and economic progress.
