Curtin Malaysia to host global materials science and engineering conference, advancing Sarawak’s innovation ambitions
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 6 August 2025 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) will take centre stage on the global scientific map as it hosts the prestigious 17th International Conference on Materials Processing and Characterisation (ICMPC 2025) from 27 to 29 November at Imperial Hotel, Miri.
Set to draw leading scientists, engineers, and academics from around the world, including the Poland, Brunei, Indonesia, India, and South Africa, ICMPC 2025 will serve as a powerful platform for advancing breakthroughs in materials science, while placing Sarawak at the heart of global research and innovation.
The conference is co-hosted by Curtin Malaysia in collaboration with the Sarawak Government, through its Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), and India’s Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering & Technology (GRIET), with strong support from Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).
Building on a legacy of past editions in the United Kingdom and India, ICMPC 2025 is set to be a catalyst for Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, driving progress in high-value manufacturing, downstream processing of rare earths, and green energy transition.
“Hosting the 17th ICMPC in Sarawak is a direct reflection of our commitment to the PCDS 2030. It aligns with the Sarawak Government’s core mandate to cultivate a new generation of talent and foster a vibrant innovation ecosystem capable of driving Sarawak towards a high-income, sustainable future,“ said Adam Yii, Mayor of Miri and Chairman of the Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC).
“To create unparalleled opportunity for students, researchers, and local industries to engage with cutting-edge knowledge, it is essential to build the skilled human capital needed to lead in high-value manufacturing, renewable energy, and the digital economy,” he stressed.
Professor Vincent Lee, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, said the university was honoured to host such a globally significant event.
“This conference reflects Curtin’s strong commitment to global collaboration and its strategic vision of transforming lives and communities through education and research with real-world impact. I am confident that the event would spark meaningful dialogue and solutions,” he remarked.
Conference Chair Professor Sujan Debnath of Curtin Malaysia noted that the event will not only highlight cutting-edge research but also inspire future directions in materials development.
“At Curtin University Malaysia, we are proud to conduct high-impact research that contributes to these solutions. This conference will be a crucible for new ideas, fostering collaborations that will shape the future of technology and sustainable development,” said Professor Sujan.
Highlighting the long-term value of the event, Amelia Roziman, Chief Executive Officer of BESarawak, said, “The knowledge exchanged and networks built here will catalyse tangible progress towards Sarawak’s shared goals of economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, leaving a powerful legacy long after the conference concludes.”
