Curtin Malaysia’s BrewChem workshop blends coffee culture with scientific curiosity

Miri, Sarawak – 21 August 2024 – A unique fusion of science and coffee culture took centre stage at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently, as 30 participants enthusiastically joined a one-day workshop that delved into the fascinating world of coffee, aptly named ‘BrewChem.’ The event, organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Student Chapter at Curtin Malaysia, offered an immersive experience that blended chemistry with the art of coffee making.

The workshop, a collaboration between the IChemE Student Chapter and Blue Cottage Coffee, a well-known Miri-based roastery and coffee equipment provider, provided an eye-opening look at the science behind every cup of coffee. Participants included students from various faculties, university staff, and the event’s organising committee, all eager to uncover the chemistry, physics, and art involved in crafting a perfect brew.

Guided by Blue Cottage Coffee’s co-founders Toh Jiun Luen and Klaus Sim, along with Dr. Evelyn Chiong Tung, a chemical and energy engineering lecturer from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, attendees embarked on a sensory and educational journey. The session kicked off with a live demonstration of roasting three single-origin green coffee beans using the state-of-the-art Nucleus Link Sample Roaster. This hands-on introduction set the tone for a deeper exploration into the science and artistry behind coffee extraction.

Dr. Chiong captivated the audience with an informative session on the leaching processes involved in brewing, breaking down complex scientific concepts into digestible insights. Participants then observed hot and cold extraction techniques demonstrated by the Blue Cottage Coffee team, and tasted a variety of single-origin coffee samples, sparking lively discussions on the nuances of flavour and aroma.

One of the event’s highlights was the interactive latte art session, where participants got hands-on experience crafting their own designs. With expert guidance from Blue Cottage Coffee’s baristas and access to professional equipment, the room buzzed with creativity as participants experimented with froth and foam.

Reflecting on the event, Klaus Sim shared valuable industry insights, touching on the challenges and rewards of working in the coffee industry. His experiences, combined with an engaging Q&A session, offered participants a rare glimpse into the intricacies of coffee production and entrepreneurship.

The event culminated with a fun-filled lucky draw and group photo, celebrating the workshop’s success. Esther Sia Jia Huan, chairperson of the Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter, expressed her pride in the event’s outcome. “It’s been a pleasure to host such a unique and successful workshop that bridges our academic interests with something as universally loved as coffee. We’re grateful for the support of Blue Cottage Coffee, our IChemE advisors, and all those who contributed to making this event memorable.”

Dr. Angnes Tiong Ngieng Tze and Dr. Bridgid Chin Lai Fui, academic advisors to the student chapter, emphasised the importance of such initiatives in blending academic knowledge with real-world applications. They highlighted that this event represents a meaningful step forward in equipping students with practical problem-solving skills and nurturing their innovative potential.

The Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter continues to be a vibrant platform that promotes industry engagement, professional development, and cross-disciplinary learning for students. The chapter’s mission aligns with IChemE’s global focus on connecting professionals across the chemical, biochemical, and process engineering fields.
